Joenji Temple

常圓寺
Joenji Temple is a Nichiren Buddhist temple located in Nishi-Shinjuku 7-chome, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. The name of the mountain is Fukuyo Mountain. The former main temple is Hiraga Mainland Temple. 奠師法縁 (奠統会). The date of its construction is unknown. It is said that around 1585 (Tensho 13), it was moved from the vicinity of Hatagaya, Shibuya Ward to its current location along the Ome Kaido. Many of the monks from Joenji were high priests, and they produced Noshita (equivalent to the president) of Nakamura Danrin, the highest school of Nichiren Buddhism. In the war of 1945 (Showa 20), many of the halls and temple treasures were lost, but they were rebuilt sequentially.
