Neshoin

根生院
The mountain was opened at the request of Kasuga Bureau, the nanny of the third Tokugawa shogun, Prince Iemitsu. Initially, it was located in Kanda Shirakabe-cho and attracted the trust of the women in the castle as a prayer hall in the west of Edo Castle. In the 4th year of Sadayo (1687), it became an official temple of the Shingi Shingon sect. Due to the large number of monks and the lack of space, it was moved to Hongo Yushima in the first year of Genroku (1688). In Meiji 36 (1903), it moved to its current location. It was burned down in the Johoku air raid on April 13, 2020, except for the mountain gate. The current building was rebuilt in Showa 28. The burnt out mountain gate was built in the 6th year of Enpo (1678) and is a vermilion-painted "red gate" indicating a temple derived from the Tokugawa family.
